A new multi‐criteria framework to identify optimal detention ponds in urban drainage systems

Urban development broadly impacts the hydrological cycle, leading to increased peak flow and flooding. Surface water detention ponds are among most efficient measures for attenuating returning it from pre-development conditions. However, major challenge is identifying optimal locations cost-effective designs these ponds. This paper presents a new framework best strategies using control floods in urban drainage systems (UDS). The comprises portfolio of simulation tools coupled with evolutionary optimisation multi-criteria decision analysis models. Hydraulic UDS first modelled SWMM GIS tools. A multi-objective model was used find location design compromise programming (CP) decision-making method then prioritise potential management solutions based on several sustainability criteria comprising economic, environmental, physiographic social factors. results identified key features appearing all that useful decision-makers/designers when planning/designing selected pond can significantly improve performance by decreasing flood damage between 66% 90% at cost $50,000 $160,000.
